The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the option to challenge particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other situations, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
