Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
